Overview 

As part of National Older Workers Week, sponsored by QA, will take a look at the results of our candidate survey, presenting the issues older workers are facing. This event aims to give employers an up-to-date view on the current situation, including the impact of Covid, to help them to implement/improve current policies.

It will cover everything from the impact of Covid on self-employment intentions, confidence, promotion and job security to longer term issues such as access to training and career development, perceptions of the recruitment process and longer-term plans.

Patrick Thomson, Policy Institute Director, Shaw Trust Foundation

Patrick Thomson has recently joined the Shaw Trust Foundation as its first Policy Institute Director. Shaw Trust is a social enterprise with charitable status challenging inequality for people across the UK through employment and related support. Patrick has a background in the public, private and charitable sectors on policy, research, communications and delivery. He is a former member of the Government Social Research Unit, and was part of the Organising Committee that delivered the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Patrick joined the Shaw Trust from six years at the Centre for Ageing Better where he led their programmes on employer engagement and age-inclusive employment.

Allan Allison, QA

Allan leads on driving the engagement and uptake of funded learning solutions for QA – the UKs largest provider of Tech training. His role is to engage with stakeholders, employers, partners and learners to align and deliver funded training services; driving uptake of upskilling, reskilling and social mobility. Allan has over 15 years of experience in leading national training providers, and partnering with government stakeholders to support effective funded reskilling. This has ranged from leading Welfare and Employability provision such as the Work Programme, to leading the response from the UKs largest Apprenticeship providers to the Levy and Apprenticeship reform. Allan is passionate about creating careers across all demographics – and has partnered with both the government, and major UK business, to support diversity recruitment, retraining and returnship programmes. He is currently supporting some of the biggest funded programmes in the UK to provide career re-training for those across all ages and backgrounds.
