If so, we are looking for a dedicated Data Engineer to join us at the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), and we would love to hear from you.

Job description

As a Data Engineer you will be part of a small, dynamic team where you will enrich the data within the organisation. You will build data pipelines and develop new data services to query, enhance and join datasets, integrating them into current business processes. You will provide access to data which will aid colleagues throughout the organisation to release the value that is inherent in our data. You will construct datasets that are easy to analyse and support the businesses requirements, whilst also helping to deliver the designs set out by senior team members.

This is a fantastic opportunity as you will design, build, test and maintain datasets in our new MCA Cloud Data Platform, ensuring they meet business requirements and user needs.
 

Responsibilities

Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

• Building analytically ready datasets and ingestion pipelines
• Reduce manual data manipulation within the business to free up people’s time by creating repeatable scalable data pipelines
• Supporting the development of data streaming systems
• Providing technical support across business projects and programmes

About you

An ideal candidate would have a basic understanding of data engineering. You will have awareness of a variety of SQL and NoSQL databases, as well as experience with at least one programming language and be able to demonstrate the competencies to rapidly acquire or improve on these skills.

You will have excellent communication skills and the ability to explain complex technical information to colleagues at all levels of the business, while being able to cater your delivery for audiences with different levels of technical ability.

We are looking for someone who is reliable, pro-active, logical and possesses good problem-solving skills. A self-starter, who can work well under pressure, adapt to different demands and data requests and work to tight deadlines.

You will be an enthusiastic, team player with the ability to work on your own initiative and is someone that will ask for help when needed but also willing to support others when the opportunity arises.

How to apply

• Building and optimising data pipelines, architectures and data sets
• Experience in munging, processing and extracting value from large, disconnected datasets
• Develop fit for purpose, resilient, scalable data services to meet user needs
• Experience with one or more programming languages e.g. Python, Scala, JavaScript
• Awareness of a variety of SQL and NoSQL databases e.g. SQL Sever, Neo4j

Interviews/assessments are likely to be held from Tuesday 16th November 2021.
