Job description

We have a fantastic opportunity for a Head of Data Science and Analytics to join our newly established team here at the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. You will provide leadership and direction across the organisation driving self-serve analytics and delivering a programme of exciting and challenging data science and analytical projects. You will be recognised as a strategic authority with technical expertise in a range of analytical techniques, and a passion for sharing your expertise with others. As a role model to other Analysts and Data Scientists you will champion adoption of best practice, communicating with senior stakeholders and convincing them of the strategic value of data.
 

Responsibilities

Your responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Driving the growth of self-serve analytics and leading the community of analysts across the organisation.
• Delivering a programme of data science and analytical projects aligned to business strategy.
• Growing our data science capability including engagement and collaboration with academia and third parties.
• Lead the Data Science and Analytics team.
• Working with the Head of Data Engineering to design and deliver the data roadmap for the MCA;
• Responsible for designing and building data science and analytical solutions;
• Provide technical leadership across business projects and programmes;
• Identifying and addressing user needs and building relationships across organisations;
• Contributes to creating an agile, fast paced organisation by promoting innovation as we investigate and adopt modern technologies and modernise our approach to policy making, enforcement and customer service;
• Provides leadership and role models IT by living and breathing our principles
• Remaining positive, engaged, enthusiastic, and committed to the vision of the organisation as all times

You will come to us with a background in analytics and a passion for driving and delivering a quality service. Using your excellent communication skills, you work with stakeholders to help them not only understand why data and analytics can make a difference but be excited by it! You are a natural leader enjoy growing and developing a team to achieve their best. You are looking for a role where you can drive innovation and change – letting the data speak for itself!

This role falls under the DDaT profession and based on capability levels can attract an enhanced pay in addition to the basic salary.
The successful candidates starting salary will be determined by performance at interview and assessed capability level and could be a combination of basic salary and capability enhancement if awarded.
The successful candidate will be required to undergo annual capability assessments which may result in the capability enhancement being increased or decreased.
While we expect it to be very rare, a drop in capability in any given assessment period results in a 12 month pay protection to allow candidates to re-attain prior capability level.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) is an executive agency of the United Kingdom working to prevent the loss of lives at sea and is responsible for implementing British and international maritime law and safety policy. It is also responsible for land based search and rescue helicopter operations from 2015.
