Job description

We have an exciting opportunity available for a Marine Surveyor with excellent experience in Plan Approval to join our team. You will be managing a dynamic and determined team and uphold, develop, promote and enforce high standards of marine safety, in accordance with MCA Service Standards.
 

Responsibilities

• Be responsible and accountable for assisting the Stability and Plan Approval Unit and UK Maritime Services in achieving its agreed annual Business Plan activities and objectives.

• Act as the main point of contact for our internal and external customers to answer technical queries on MCA Fishing Vessel Construction Standards.

• Take a lead role in producing, updating, and reviewing technical standards, guidance, policies and procedures for Fishing Vessel construction and Plan Approval

• Act as Line manager for surveyors within the Plan Approval team, providing, support, advice, and guidance to develop and maintain skills and experience in the team.

• Assist in the day-to-day management of the Plan Approval team and allocate Plan Approval work within the team and ensure a consistent approach. Support effective and efficient operational delivery by the Plan Approval team.

• Carry out plan approval tasks for a range of vessel types and perform review and formal approval of drawings and information assessed by other surveyors in the team.

• Act as deputy to the Head of Stability and Plan Approval Unit in their absence

• Contribute, when requested, to the monitoring of organisations authorised to undertake surveys on MCA’s behalf to provide assurance that these activities are carried out in accordance with MCA requirements.

About you

As an experienced Marine Surveyor, with significant understanding and working knowledge of Plan Approval, you work confidently autonomously and have an excellent eye for detail; enabling you to carry out detailed examination of vessel plans and particulars for a wide range of ship types. You are a natural leader and will have the ability to engage your team and encourage them to achieve their best whilst identifying training?needs and celebrating areas of success. You have fantastic communication skills both written and verbal and comfortably provide expert advice to industry and public in accordance with MCA policies.

Licences

Full Driving licence valid for driving in the UK is required.

Qualifications

The minimum academic qualification required is one of:

a. A degree accredited by RINA as meeting the academic requirements for Chartered Engineer.
b. Applicants without the qualifications stated above, may also be eligible if they are Chartered Engineer (C. Eng) (through Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA) or the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST)), but in such cases evidence of the equivalent level of learning plus marine industry experience will need to have be demonstrated to the satisfaction of an MCA S&I technical review panel.

A wide variety of relevant degrees are available in UK and overseas. In all of the above cases other qualifications may be accepted, subject to evidence being submitted that demonstrates an acceptable academic content covering a similar level of technical knowledge related to commercial shipping. Such qualifications will be reviewed and assessed by the MCA S&I technical review panel.

Relevant marine industry experience' is that which provides understanding and experience of the underpinning competencies expected of a Naval Architect Surveyor (see MSF 4989) which includes stability measurement or analysis, marine structural design, construction, or repair.

In each of the above cases the stated qualifications need to be supported by `sufficient experience' in a managerial role, or in a technical capacity of responsibility, within the maritime industry.
