If so, we are looking for an Aviation Security Trainer to join us at the Department for Transport (DfT), and we’d love to hear from you.

We will look to you to develop and maintain DfT’s international aviation security training programme to ensure that all of our aviation security experts receive the training they require to enable them to carry out their roles effectively.

Job description

Aviation Security International Operations (ASIO) is a division that has expanded at a significant rate since 2015, in response to the global aviation security threat. We are a dynamic team that works to improve the standards of aviation security around the world for inbound flights to the UK. The division consists of regional teams, which lead on the work we do with host countries in conducting aviation security assessments overseas, and cross-cutting teams, which lead on the division’s strategic work across the regions.


The Training Team is responsible for ensuring that all of ASIO’s staff receive the training they need to carry out their roles effectively – this includes technical aviation security training and role specific practical skills alongside broader areas such as briefing and drafting, engagement and diplomacy. The team is currently redesigning the initial training offer for new starters. The team is also involved in several key projects taking place within the Transformation Programme, for example how we Quality Assure training that is delivered on our behalf overseas, and working alongside the existing trainer, the post-holder will be responsible for leading some of these strands of work.

The main duties and responsibilities of the role include, but are not limited to:
• Developing and maintaining DfT’s international aviation security training programme, covering all staff, including those working or based overseas
• Developing and delivering the current initial training for each type of aviation security post
• Identifying external training courses and providers to complement the internal programme and developing training and support materials to be used by staff working overseas
• Leading on the planning and delivery of general training for all ASIO staff
• Maintaining records of training and identifying development needs within ASIO
• Potential line management responsibility for one EO

About you

The successful candidate will have a sound understanding of aviation security regulations and principles and regulations, such as:

• the threat to and from civil aviation, threat assessment and risk management
• UK, EU and ICAO regulations, the UK NASP and organisation of countermeasure regimes for airports, airlines, cargo (including ACC3), IFS and other directed entities
• screening and searching of passengers, staff, their items, cabin baggage, hold baggage, airport supplies, vehicles, aircraft and facilities
• screening technology and equipment testing requirements, including the recognition of prohibited weapons, offensive/dangerous items such as firearms, explosives, explosive and incendiary devices and CBRN threat
• airport perimeter and access control principles. The design of security control areas in line with ASIAD including the protection of airport key points
• air carrier security programmes, ground and inflight security including Triple A requirements
• UK CAA compliance monitoring regime

The successful candidate will be able to apply their knowledge of the industry to identify and address capability requirements and gaps to develop and deliver high quality, appropriate training programmes.

Due to Covid-19, there is less capacity to complete National Security Vetting checks. Vetting is being prioritised for staff either directly involved in the HMG Covid-19 Response or roles in a limited number of agreed high priority areas.

Therefore, in some instances, following successful BPSS pre-employment checks, the successful candidate may commence employment on the premise that NSV higher security checks will be conducted once normal service levels resume. Should NSV checks prove to be unsuccessful, an alternative role, not requiring NSV clearance, will be identified within the department.

If this is not possible the start date for some campaigns will need to be delayed until vetting has been completed.

New entrants are expected to join on the minimum of the pay band.
