Barking Riverside London is a Private Limited joint venture Company between the Mayor of London and L&Q to deliver a quality led new riverfront town in East London comprising of 10,800 homes, a new rail station, new schools and commercial and cultural offerings along 2km of south-facing Thames river frontage. Barking Riverside London will feature healthcare, schools, open space, public squares, new rail and river connections in and out of central London, new thriving commercial centre including shopping, community and leisure facilities.  This is a unique site in London that has a rich industrial history and exciting opportunities for people to put down roots and to be part of something completely different.  It will be the new model for the great estates in London, with residents at its heart. 

Most excitingly, there is an ambition to connect the existing community and a new generation of Londoners to the River Thames and to codesign and deliver facilities, services and projects on the river frontage and to create a new night-time economy in this part of the borough.

As one of the largest developments in Europe, this ambitious project is gaining momentum with a programme committed to facilitating delivery of up to 600 new homes a year for the next 15 years.

As Master Developer, Barking Riverside is responsible for taking forward and coordinating all aspects of the place and infrastructure design needed for a successful community.   New homes are delivered by our plot developer partners in line with our ambition to design and transform the former power station site into a high quality development with a sustainable estate governance model that will help build on this thriving, healthy community for decades to come.

We are looking for a high performing Deputy Managing Director to support the growth of the business and to lead a focused team of Directors on the strategic delivery of an ambitious programme.

This is a new opportunity to play a leading part in the development of our strategic agenda at BRL and its delivery.  This will be a challenging role that will be highly rewarding and high-profile. Reporting to the Managing Director of BRL, you will ensure the best approach in delivering sustained and ambitious growth in a demanding development and sales environment.

You will provide direction to a team of Directors that lead their functions and will ensure a high level of process and customer satisfaction is delivered, while advocating a culture of accountability, ownership and teamwork. In addition to internal leadership, you will also build and nurture our stakeholders, in particular, our land partners.  Experience of managing senior Directors in a complex development environment is essential.  As a people manager you will attract and retain the best people and ensure that we have the skills, knowledge and experience to meet the current and the future needs of the business.

Through your passion for staff development you will work with the Managing Director and the other Deputy MD in the transition to the new structure whilst delivering improvements in the quality of our processes, decisions and projects.  You will take responsibility for cross functional working within your remit and focus on transparency and ensure that the highest levels of Health & Safety standards and practices are embraced to protect our staff, customers, residents and partners and ensure that risks are fully understood and managed.


We are looking for a leader who is passionate about making a positive difference to people’s lives, who is willing to learn about the unique qualities of the project and the people around it and with the ability to understand and communicate complex technical matters to a range of people.

Essential for the role will be:
· Experience of contributing to and influencing the strategic leadership of a sizeable organisation, evidencing corporate achievements and inspirational leadership.
· Experience of leading a large and diverse function and associated resources to focus and drive delivery of development outputs as a team - including infrastructure, commercial and housing delivery.
· Experience of leading a business to a defined programme of operations and to attain the set goals from an approved business plan.
· Strong track record of driving efficiencies whilst improving services and standards.
· Demonstrable experience of leading on and delivering change in a commercial, resident and customer-focused environment.
· Track record of influencing board-level stakeholders and the personal impact and confidence to challenge in a positive and controlled way.
· Experience of working and leading a team of senior Directors with the ability to build confidence and loyalty as part of a team.
· Track record of representing the organisation, preferably as a sector leader, at all levels including government bodies, auditors and councils etc. building effective networks and working relationships.
· Thorough understanding of the housing, land, property, local government or central government sector and political stakeholder management, as well as evidence of adapting learning from the commercial sector.
