Job description

As a Higher Statistical Officer, you will work with your team to produce high-quality statistics to be published by the Department and used by policy makers in their decisions. You will use your data and statistical skills to explain and communicate analysis as well as explaining the opportunities and limitation of data and analysis to a less technical audience. You will take areas of statistical work from conception right through to delivery while working collaboratively with policymakers, other statisticians, modellers, economists, and social researchers in the Department, as well as other government departments and external stakeholders.

We are looking for driven and motivated individuals who are looking to further their knowledge within statistics and data within the Department for Transport.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities may include but are not limited to

- Completing and reporting on analysis to inform customers and ensure that policy options are underpinned by the available statistics and analysis.

- Interpreting and summarising analysis accurately whilst making use of the different resources available such as Excel, R and SQL.

- Leading and assisting with the production of Government Statistics publications, which may include project management.

- Working to seek and embed innovative ways to disseminate data, such as automation, dashboard and new publication formats.

- Developing and implementing Reproducible Analytical Pipelines and automation, including for data validation and production of statistics publications.

About you

To be successful, you will need to be someone who has experience in designing data collection activities, including gathering new data or combining existing data sources.

You have experience in extracting and manipulating data from multiple existing data sources to enable new analysis. You are able to perform quality checks on data to assess suitability and provide advice on whether data is suitable and innovate new quality assurance processes to improve the quality of team’s data sources.

You can select and use a range of appropriate statistical and analytical techniques, that they can justify and explain clearly and succinctly to customers, colleagues or other non-technical users. You have the ability to apply statistical understanding to draw conclusions based on robust evidence, telling the story to users, and exploring innovative data visualisation and presentation techniques to communicate data findings.

Additional information

A minimum of 40% of your working time should be spent at your principal workplace, although requirements to attend other locations for official business, or carry out detached duty in another DfT workplace, will also count towards this level of attendance.

Qualifications

To be eligible to join the Government statistical service you should have one of the following:

• A first- or second-class honours degree in a numerate subject (2:2 minimum for Statistical Officer) containing at least 25% taught statistical content (e.g. Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Sciences, Business Studies, Psychology, Geography, or similar)

• A higher degree, e.g. an MSc or PhD, in a subject containing formal statistical training (e.g. Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Sciences, Business Studies, Data Science, Psychology, Geography or similar)

• Have worked in a statistical or data science field for a minimum of two years and are able to demonstrate Continuous Professional Development in applying statistics or data science at the same level as a foundation degree or Higher National Diploma (level five)

• Have achieved or on track to achieve a level 4 apprenticeship including at least 2 years in a statistical/data analysis field in government and are able to demonstrate continuous professional development in statistics/data analysis
