Job Details

FSCS is the UK's compensation scheme which protects consumers when their financial services firm goes bust. We're part of the regulatory environment which is critical to promoting financial stability and consumer protection in the UK. We're funded by the financial services industry. We make a real difference to people's lives, helping them to get their lives back on track. So if you want real purpose in your day-to-day job, then come and join the team here!

At FSCS, we recognise the importance of a diverse and inclusive workplace and understand that this in turn helps us to deliver a brilliant experience for our customers. We're committed to ensuring that FSCS is a place where everyone can succeed in achieving their goals. At the heart of this strategy is an open, honest, and supportive culture which enables people to bring the best of themselves to work.

We have also won a multitude of prestigious National Awards including Personnel Today 2021 "Family Friendly Employer of the Year", HR Excellence Awards 2021 "Best Flexible Working Strategy", a Times Top 50 Employer for Women and have been ranked 4th in the UK's Most Inclusive Companies.

We're looking for a junior/mid-level lawyer to join our award-winning legal team to lead on recoveries cases. Pursuing recoveries is one of FSCS's core statutory functions. Once we pay compensation to customers, we take on their legal rights, and pursue recovery claims both in the insolvency of the financial services firm that has gone bust, but also against other parties that have some responsibility for the losses suffered (such as the firm's Professional Indemnity Insurer).

Reporting to our Head of Recoveries, you'll be responsible for progressing our day-to-day recoveries portfolio, including working closely with our internal operational teams to support any litigation and insolvency cases, as well as developing FSCS's strategy in relation to recoveries. Increasingly, given the nature of the compensation claims we're dealing with, FSCS is required to pursue litigation matters all over the world. The work is incredibly varied, complex and challenging. https://www.fscs.org.uk/media/press/2019/mar/300m-recovered-over-5-years/

You'll be a qualified lawyer, with a contentious financial services background, ideally with some insolvency experience (although this is not a pre-requisite). You'll be familiar with the practice and procedure involved in pursuing litigation matters in the UK, but also have the confidence and authority to manage external counsel (we have a panel of law firms) both in the UK and overseas.
