Coach Martin Garrity explains why career plans often never turn out how you expected and why it’s important to embrace the twists and turns.
The reality of a career is nearly always different from the plan.
➡️ Progression is rarely smooth and predictable. Mistake. Opportunity. Catastrophe. Chance encounter.
➡️ It can make for a tumultuous journey.
➡️ What matters is that each of us keeps our core values front-of-mind when we’re called on to take a step, make a decision or bounce back from a problem.
➡️ But values can change over time. What was important to me at 21 is not the same now that I’m older.
➡️ Taking out my first mortgage meant that security was important at that time. When children arrived in my life, some flexibility was at the top of my priorities.
➡️ As I matured self-realisation and making a contribution became more important.
➡️ Being clear about your overriding priority will help you to navigate the blind alleys and setbacks.
